What is a Tooth Extraction?
When a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone, it is called tooth extraction. This procedure is a permanent solution for a number of oral health conditions.
While our Cranbrook dentists would always rather save a natural tooth, sometimes this is not always possible if a tooth is damaged beyond repair, or negatively affecting the surrounding teeth and overall oral health.
In these situations, a tooth will need to be extracted. Common reasons for extraction include severe damage to the tooth or issues caused by wisdom teeth.
Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that typically emerge in the back corners of the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25.
This set of molars is not always functional, and can crowd out other teeth as they develop. They may also create problems with your oral hygiene.
In these cases, your dentist may recommend removing them.
Replacing Missing Teeth
After a tooth is extracted, it’s essential to fill the gap left behind to maintain your oral health. Leaving spaces unfilled can lead to shifting teeth, bite issues, and even jawbone deterioration over time.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, your dentist will discuss tooth replacement options with you, which may include dental bridges, dental crowns, or implants.
